Sorting waste at your Korean accommodation

Ask your host where, how and when to leave each type of waste. The most useful instruction is the one for your actual building and district.

This guide helps you ask the right questions during a short stay. It does not set collection times, bag colours or disposal rules for every Korean city.

Get the building's instructions early

Before your first takeaway meal, ask for the containers or bags to use for general waste, food waste and recycling. Find out whether the accommodation handles collection or expects guests to use a shared disposal point.

Ask for a photo of the correct disposal area and a written example if the instructions are unclear. A photograph of your uncertain item can be easier for a host to answer than a broad question about “recycling.” Do not put room waste in a street bin simply because you have not found the building's collection point.

Separate food from packaging

Seoul's food-waste guide explains that some kitchen leftovers, including bones and eggshells, do not belong in the food-waste stream. It also describes removing liquids and non-food material. Use this as background, then follow the accommodation's current instructions for the item and collection system. Read the city's food-waste guide.

For a takeaway container, ask where leftover food goes before sorting the container itself. Empty it and follow the posted preparation instructions. If an item combines several materials, check the label or ask rather than assuming the whole item belongs with plastic.

Confirm collection timing

Write down the permitted place and time for each category. Ask about weekends, holidays and the morning of checkout. Seoul's 2026 Seollal notice is a concrete example of schedules differing by district and holiday; its February dates are not today's collection schedule. See the dated city example.

If you have a broken appliance, battery or large item, ask the host for the correct separate process. Do not infer permission from a pile left by someone else.
