Buying and using a transport card in Seoul

Choose the ticket or card for your journeys first, then check how that particular product can be loaded. Buying a card, adding travel credit and buying an unlimited pass are different transactions.

This guide focuses on visitors making everyday journeys around Seoul. It is based on source review; no card purchase or payment terminal was tested.

Start with your itinerary

For flexible journeys, compare a reloadable transport card with a pass covering your actual routes. The Korea Tourism Organization lists Tmoney, EZL, WOWPASS and Climate Card products. Their features are not interchangeable. Read the official card overview.

Write down your accommodation area, airport route and any trips outside Seoul before choosing. For a pass, check every planned station and bus against its current service area. Do not infer that a service is included just because it appears on a Seoul map.

At the shop or machine

1. Ask for the exact product by name. Tmoney cards are listed by KTO as available at convenience stores and certain subway information centres.
2. Confirm whether the displayed amount buys the physical card or also includes usable credit.
3. Decide how much to load for your first journeys. Keep the loading receipt if one is available.
4. Check the balance before leaving. A payment receipt alone does not explain which balance or product you bought.

Carry a payment backup. The accepted method depends on the card, machine and transaction, so a foreign bank card working in a shop does not settle whether it can reload your transit product.

A specific foreign-card exception

Seoul's March 2026 announcement describes international-card payment at new vending machines on Lines 1–8 for Climate Card short-term passes and single-journey tickets. It also describes a service fee. This is not a statement that every ordinary Tmoney recharge accepts foreign cards. Check the current screen and total before paying. Read the city announcement.

Keep one simple travel routine

Have your selected card ready before reaching the reader and check its response. If it fails, move aside and ask for help rather than repeatedly trying different cards. Plan a small top-up before the next trip instead of discovering a low balance while boarding.

For the actual ride, continue to subway steps or city-bus steps. Before departure, check your card provider's refund rules rather than assuming its purchase price or remaining credit is fully refundable.
