Ordering your first restaurant meal in Korea

First find out where to order, then confirm the dish, number of portions and total. A counter, table tablet, kiosk or server can each involve a different sequence.

This is a communication guide for an ordinary meal. It does not promise a particular restaurant's seating policy, menu language or accepted payment method.

Before joining a queue

Check that you have the correct branch and that the kitchen is taking orders. Opening hours and last-order times are different questions. If there is a waiting screen, find out whether it is a table queue or a system for collecting a paid order.

Build a clear order

Point to the menu item and state the quantity. Before choosing a shared dish, ask how many people it serves and whether a minimum number of portions applies. Ask about the ingredients that matter to you before ordering; a photograph or short translated title may omit parts of a dish.

For a kiosk or tablet, review the basket before payment. Check the quantity, selected options and any additions. If an option is unclear, ask staff while the order is still editable. Our café kiosk guide explains useful screen words.

Look for the restaurant's own routine

KTO describes self-service water and side dishes, ordering machines, call bells and cutlery drawers as features visitors may encounter. Look for these at your table without assuming every restaurant has them. Ask whether a refill or additional item has a charge before requesting it. Read KTO's food-service overview.

When you are ready to leave, check where payment is taken and whether you already paid at the ordering screen. Keep your receipt until you have checked the items. KTO notes that tipping is not ordinarily expected; follow the actual bill for the meal and any disclosed charges.
